I walked into my first-period desktop publishing class, only to hear the PA system announce that America had been attacked by terrorists. The details of who, when, where, and how were absent from that announcement, but would present themselves, piece by piece, throughout the day. The “why,” on the other hand, took considerably longer to present itself, and even to this day, is not completely understood.
All I remember thinking is “goddamn, this nation just took a detour, and I have a feeling it’s not a short one.”
I wish I had something more to say, either about the day itself, or how I feel about it now, five years later. But it all seems as if it’s been said before, and bears no repetition.
